The Lily Corm
by Helen Mecagni
I dug the lily corm today. Being fully entangled in the byways of the underground, It did not come up easily. When I finally eased and teased the white body Away from its girdle of earth, I saw just how fragile and perfect it was. And persistent. Formed around the top like a lizard green crown were at least fifty cormlets Poised for next year. For an instant I wondered why it bothered to live, To grow, to prepare for the future, to be beautiful. In the next instant I knew the answer. Love. The universe loves this lily corm. And holding the glowing, chilly orb in my dirty hands, I knew I didn't now, nor would i ever Need religion or the stock market or pills; because i had something greater. I had seen, felt , and held in my hands The love of the universe.
